St. Augustine Sardines Name Leo Alfonzo Head Coach for 2027 Season

Former Flagler College assistant brings a player-development focus to the Sardines dugout

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The St. Augustine Sardines today announced Leo Alfonzo as the team's head coach for the 2027 season. Alfonzo joins the Sardines from Flagler College, where he served as an assistant coach and helped lead the Saints to the most wins in the program's Division II history.

A Local Coach With a Winning Track Record

Alfonzo arrives from just across town. As an assistant at Flagler College, he was part of a staff that guided the Saints to a record-setting season, the winningest in the school's Division II era.

His work at Flagler centered on player development, the same priority he brings to the Sardines. He knows the St. Augustine baseball community and the talent that comes through the area each summer.

Playing Career

Before coaching, Alfonzo built his game at two levels of college baseball. He was a two-year starter at South Florida State College, then moved on to Texas A&M International, where he started at shortstop for two seasons.

Alfonzo graduated from Valdosta State University in 2024. Having recently been a college player himself, he relates closely to the athletes he coaches.

In His Own Words

"I am excited to get the chance to develop our players," Alfonzo said. "I pride myself on teaching players things I wish I knew when I was their age. There's always something to learn on and off the field."
